Introduction

The institution of slavery existed in the United States from 1619 when the first slaves were brought to the colony of Jamestown, Virginia.  An estimated 10 million Africans had been forcibly transported to the Americas over the course of 200 years.  An 1860 U.S. census report estimated that close to 4 million people were enslaved in the southern states and that prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War, there were approximately 3,953,760 slaves in the southern states. In 1865 slavery was abolished with the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Throughout this period, Americans debated the social, economic and political ramifications of slavery. Newspaper opinion pages, political speeches and private journals revealed the prevailing sentiments and conflicts of the era.
